Everything You Need to Know About Diamond Rio
Diamond Rio will be performing at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau! The country band is gearing up to drop their tenth studio album, "I Made It!" in September. Until then, check out their other albums and keep reading for some fun facts about the group.
1. They weren't always known as Diamond Rio.
The band began playing in 1982 as the Grizzly River Boys, then as the Tennessee River Boys. They played regularly in Nashville at the Opryland amusement park. The group's lineup shifted until 1989 when its current six members remained steadfast.
In 1990, music producer Tim DuBois heard the Tennessee River Boys open for George Jones in concert. He signed them to Arista Records immediately, but label executives wanted a name change before releasing an album. The group settled on Diamond Rio. The inspiration being Diamond Reo trucks, an American truck manufacturer. The group's lead singer, Marty Roe, misspelled Reo, but decided the new name, Diamond Rio, has a Southwestern modern country flair that the group liked.
2. Diamond Rio hit the airwaves with a chart-topper.
In 1991, the band's debut single, "Meet in the Middle" made them the first band to ever hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with a debut single. Since 1991, Diamond Rio has had 32 more singles on the charts with four more reaching the coveted number one spot.
3. They've received plenty of recognition for their achievements.
Three of Diamond Rio's album sales have reached platinum by RIAA standards, meaning the album sold one million units. They've won four Group of the Year awards from the Country Music Association, and two Top Vocal Group awards from the Academy of Country Music. They've been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards, but won once. Still, not a bad track record.
4. Diamond Rio's style is unique, that's why their fan base is so large.
Diamond Rio's music is often categorized as "Country" but their music offers more layers. There's a strong bluegrass influence and listeners can pick up on country rock as well as pop in some songs. The multi-styled music makes for interesting performance sets that keep fans engaged.
5. They have no shortage of songs.
To date, Diamond Rio has released nine studio albums, and even got into the spirit of the holiday season with a Christmas Album. From those albums they've created four Greatest Hits complications. It's very likely you've heard one of their songs at some point in your life.
