Top 5 Scenic Drives in Missouri

With crisp temperatures and golden leaves, autumn is the perfect time to hit the open road in search of adventure. Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need to cross any state lines for a memorable road trip. In fact, you’ll only need a half tank of gas for some of these scenic drives in Missouri! Pick one of these routes to follow (or all of them!), and let the “Show Me State” show you all of the things that make it special!

    1. Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway
    45 minutes, 24 miles

If you want to really feel like you’re a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, look no further than a drive on Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway. Running west to east from Branson to West Plains, this stretch of road sets a perfect backdrop for a fall road trip. You’ll have to be careful to keep your eyes on the road as you drive through dense woodlands and past sparkling streams in Missouri’s Ozark hill country.

    2. Route 66
5 hours (with no stops), 313 miles

Come and get your kicks on Route 66! There really is no better place to spot mom and pop shops and motels that will have you wondering if you’ve gone back in time! Start in St. Louis and head westbound for the 300-odd-mile journey toward Joplin, which will bring you to the Kansas border. Soak up all the kitschy Americana and shifting landscapes along the ride, and don’t forget to stop at a diner to order a good old-fashioned hamburger and slice of pie à la mode!

    5-6 hours, 215 miles

The mighty Mississippi is a symbol of America, and Missouri has a front row view of this iconic river. Take advantage of the state’s proximity to this national treasure and drive alongside the rushing waters and past historic trading towns. Begin your journey in the north of the state in Canton and travel south through St. Louis, ending your journey in New Madrid.

    4. Lake of the Ozarks
    40 minutes, 22 miles

You can’t get more picturesque than driving through the Ozarks. Arguably one of the best stretches of road is from Bagnell Dam to Ha Ha Tonka, where you’ll pass by scenic hills, valleys and babbling streams. Be sure to stop at the historic water mills along the way for a perfect photo op!

    5. Cliff Drive
15 minutes (allow longer for stops), 4 miles

If you want a getaway but don’t have much time, Cliff Drive will pack in adventure without taking too much time. This urban yet scenic byway passes right through Kansas City, but doesn’t skimp on beauty. Taking in the sights of limestone bluffs and wildlife in historic George E. Kessler Park will make you appreciate how close Missouri’s biggest metropolis is to some of the state’s most stunning landscapes.
